Walmart of Weed: Marijuana Megastore Opens

By Jason Beahm | Last updated on

Times are definitely changing. To imagine even ten years ago that there would be mainstream marijuana megastores in the United States would have seemed laughable. But with the passage of medical marijuana laws, marijuana is going mainstream. Now the latest development is weGrow, the so-called Walmart of weed.

The 10,000-square-foot store Sacramento store will contains everything you need to grow marijuana, as well as marijuana-related products. But the store will not sell any marijuana, the Associated Press reports. The store calls itself a "supply and training destination for legal pot growers."

weGrow started as a business called iGrow in Oakland last year. After opening the Sacramento Walmart of weed, they plan to open marijuana megastores in Arizona, Oregon, Colorado and New Jersey. Employees at the store will be trained in marijuana cultivation and will gladly give advice on growing to anyone with a valid doctor's recommendation. But "If you do not have a script, we're not willing to discuss cannabis with you," said spokesman for the store Mike Garcia, the Daily Mail reports.

Despite the fact that marijuana continues to exist in a legal gray area in the United States, there is no doubt that the marijuana industry is headed mainstream. Will you shop at a marijuana megastore? How does the idea of a Walmart of weed in your neighborhood sit with you?

What to make of this is a matter of personal opinion, but it will certainly be interesting from a legal perspective to watch as the area of law continues to involve. Marijuana law has a number of significant legal issues involving questions of constitutional law, federal vs. state power, and harm reduction vs. zero tolerance/prohibition.
