Treasure Map: Rare Coin Dealer Sues Google over Directions to Home

By Tanya Roth, Esq. | Last updated on

Privacy is getting to be a rare commodity these days. That is what precious coin dealer Jon Harris of Jupiter, Florida has discovered. The angry dealer in rare and precious coins is suing Google for invasion of privacy in telling the whole world where he lives. Which might not be such a terrible thing, except for Harris's reasonable assumption that as a coin dealer, thieves might be very interested in where he lives and what he keeps there.

According to a report by TCPalm, Harris filed his suit Monday in Martin County Circuit court against Google, claiming that having his home address associated with the sale of rare coins leaves him and his family members targets for a home invasion. Harris claims he first discovered that his home address was being given as a response to a Google search for local coin dealers back in 2007. He wrote a letter of complaint to Google and the address was removed.

Then, in November, 2009, it was back. Harris wrote four additional letters and had an attorney send another threatening legal action. According to attorney Mitchell Sens's letter, Google's failure to correct the situation was causing an "inherently dangerous" situation for Harris and his family.

Harris's suit seeks an injunction to prevent Google from re-posting the address and includes causes of action for invasion of privacy and emotional distress. Officials from Google did not have a comment on the suit when reached by TCPalm on Monday.

A review of the offending ad still lists Harris's address as a coin dealer in Jupiter, Florida. It is not clear whether this reflects his home or not. A satellite view of the marked spot on the map seems to reveal a stretch of sand. Maybe the coins are now buried treasure?
