Heavy Metal Rocker Sues Over Sushi Outbreak
A heavy metal band's lead singer says he was rocked by food poisoning while on tour. Now he's suing a California company over a recalled sushi product that allegedly made him sick.
"Everything tasted great," Chris Fronzak, 22, of the band Attila told UPI about his meal at a Louisiana sushi restaurant last month. "The amount of sushi I got was insane. Little did I know, it gave me Salmonella."
Within 36 hours, Fronzak says he suffered severe stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. He was treated at a Missouri hospital — and racked up $10,000 in medical bills — before his illness was linked to a nationwide Salmonella sushi outbreak, UPI reports.
Heavy metal rocker Chris Fronzak, of Portland, Ore., was one of 258 people sickened by Salmonella-tainted sushi between January 28 and April 20, according to his Salmonella sushi lawsuit. More than 30 people nationwide had to seek hospital treatment, the suit states.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has blamed the outbreak on contaminated tuna meat called "Nakaochi scrape" that was distributed to restaurants and grocery stores across the country. California-based Moon Marine USA recalled nearly 59,000 pounds of the product last month.
Fronzak decided to pursue his Salmonella sushi lawsuit to get reimbursed for his medical bills, he told MSNBC. He has a 7-month-old son and no health insurance.
Medical bills are among the most common types of compensation requested in food-poisoning lawsuits. Victims can also typically seek compensation for lost income and any out-of-pocket expenses directly caused by food poisoning.
Heavy metal frontman Chris Fronzak isn't the first to file a Salmonella sushi lawsuit linked to the Moon Marine recall. Two Wisconsin women are also suing Moon Marine for their medical expenses, and more suits may follow.
