George Lucas Sues Over 'Jedi Mind' Headset

By Jason Beahm | Last updated on

The Jedi could influence and control the minds of others by making use of the Jedi mind trick. Jedi Mind, Inc. claims their wireless headset uses brainwaves, both conscious and non-conscious to allow users to play games, run software and a host of other computer applications, powered by no more than the thoughts in their brain.

But hold the phone. What was the name of that company? Jedi Mind, Inc.? Hmmm...is there anyone out there that might have a problem with such a name? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

George Lucas, of LucasFilm and creator of "Star Wars," is known for being very sensitive to trademark and copyright infringement. Lucas has filed a lawsuit for $5 million against Jedi Mind, Inc. LucasFilm sent a cease and desist letter to Jedi Mind, Inc. in May 2009. Apparently Brent Founch, chief of Jedi Mind, Inc., agreed to have the company phase out the use of "Jedi Mind." However, according to LucasFilm, the company did not phase out the use of the marks. LucasFilm then sent a second cease and desist letter last September. At the time Jedi Mind, Inc. was still selling products called "Master Mind," "Jedi Mouse" and "Think Tac Toe."

According to LucasFilm, Jedi Mind, Inc. is infringing on their trademarks the infringment will cause consumer confusion and harm LucasFilm business. Although LucasFilm does not own a trademark specifically to "Jedi Mind," however it claims rights to "all characteristics associated with the Jedi knights," Reuters reports. Legally, the owner of a copyright has the exclusive right to the copyrighted work, including derivative works. Under this theory, LucasFilm can argue that Jedi Mind, Inc. has violated their copyright.
