Small Business Feeling Hopeful

By Neetal Parekh on August 31, 2009 2:09 PM

Life in the small business world seems to be looking up these days.  Business confidence is the highest it has been in 18 months, according to a recent study conducted by Discover Small Business WatchSM.  The index climbed to the highest level since February 2008 over the month of August.  And the survey reported a drop in the number of small business owners who thought the economy was getting worse.

But the glimmers of optimism seems to be focused on "green" business, owners identified sectors including energy, technology, green industries as having the most potential for future growth.  On the flip side, small business felt manufacturing, financial services, retail, and restaurants were among the least promising sectors for growth.

And though the "green revolution" seems to be dominating headlines and indicating overall trends, the study showed that over 70% of small business have not instituted any kind of green measures in the past year that have resulted in profits.

The Discover Small Business Watch is a monthly index that measures economic confidence of small business owners in the U.S. who have less than 5 employees, including an approximated 22 million businesses.
