Benefits of Legal Tech Outsourcing

By William Vogeler, Esq. | Last updated on

In an age when technology is making some careers obsolete, lawyers can thank the outsourcing of digital services for helping them compete.

According to a recent survey, lawyers are using more outside services to handle digital tasks at their firms. Swiss Post Solutions (SPS) North America, a leader in outsourcing and digitization solutions, says law firms outsourced mailroom and messenger services the most (93 percent), reception services next (50 percent), and then conference room management (47 percent). Big law firms have led the way, but smaller firms are catching up.

Onboard With Outsourcing Digital

"The trends have shifted: outsourcing benefits are no longer exclusive to the largest law firms -- firms with 51-150 attorneys are also experiencing the payoffs," according to KSLA News 12.

The key business objectives cited by the 67 firms in the survey were to improve client service levels, create cost savings, incorporate innovation, and reach upgraded talent. A majority of firms reported that outsourcing had especially shown improvements in customer service and cost savings.

Millennial Attorneys Are Changing the Industry

Janet Tarzia, vice president of marketing and communications at SPS, said that law firms are outsourcing more as they hire technology-focused executives. Digitizing records is the driving force behind outsourcing because it helps firms increase productivity and flexibility. It also allows lawyers to work remotely or on their mobile devices.

The move toward digitization is fueled in part by millennial attorneys entering law firms. There are clear benefits to hiring millennials. As digital natives, they're literally disrupting the legal industry. Young lawyers let technology do the heavy lifting -- in part by embracing tech outsourcing.
