Time Master + Billing App: Is it Worth Your Time?

By Edward Tan, JD on July 09, 2012 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

There are many ways for lawyers to keep track of their billable hours. From going old-school with pen and paper to using Excel spreadsheets, there are a lot of options, including using your iPhone. Time Master + Billing is one such app geared towards this purpose.

Developed by On-Core Software LLC, Time Master isn't specifically designed for lawyers. Rather it's meant to be used by any hourly professional. The app allows users to turn their iPhones and iPads into a fully functional billable hour record keeping device.

But at $9.99, is it worth the price of admission?

It might be, depending on how much you dislike your current time-keeping system.

While the app might sound like an expensive stopwatch, it's quite a capable piece of software. In addition to letting users manually start and stop the clock on clients, Time Master supports incremental billing. That's a definite plus for the 15-minute lawyer lifestyle.

The app can be customized to bill based on clients or projects. It also allows users to associate billing codes for each and even set the amount of time allotted for completion.

The software can notify you when you're going over a time limit and stop the clock on its own. But don't worry, the records aren't set in stone. Users can still go back and make adjustments.

Perhaps Time Master's best feature is its ability to generate and email billable hour reports. The app has a slew of customization options for this purpose, but the default set-up will work fine for most. Making a report is easy. It essentially boils down to selecting the client(s) and date range, and then tapping the "Generate" button. The app then creates a report that you can email to yourself right away.

Time Master + Billing also supports expense tracking. This is nice, but will likely be unnecessary for most lawyers. You can see video demos of all its features in action by clicking here. Though it's a bit on the pricier side, the app is still one of the best billable hour trackers in Apple's App Store.
