New York Courthouses

Last updated: September 24, 2013

New York City may be the setting for many a primetime legal drama, but navigating the ins and outs of the city’s multiple court systems is more complicated than it may look on television. The five boroughs of the city each have several courthouses that serve different purposes and handle different kinds of legal issues. The New York City courts usually handle less serious legal issues, like small claims, housing issues and misdemeanors, while the New York State Supreme Courts take on the more serious legal issues, from violent crimes to disputes involving large amounts of money. With hundreds of thousands of cases filed every year, it’s safe to say that these courthouses are some of the busiest in the world. Whatever your legal challenges, this guide to New York City courthouses can help you find your way.
