Top 3 Cool Jobs This Week: Space, Surprise, and, Well, Crocs

By Casey C. Sullivan, Esq. on March 03, 2017 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

You can use a law degree for anything, they say, and they're not entirely wrong. Lawyers have gone on to become movie stars, dictators, even ice cream makers. But you don't need to become a rock star to have an interesting career, as this week's cool jobs attest.

As part of our affiliate relationship with Indeed, this week we're bringing you jobs touching on everything from space exploration, to a charming town in Arizona, to, well, rubber shoes.

1. Counsel, SpaceX

Want to be the first lawyer on Mars? Well, this isn't the job for that, but it's close. SpaceX, the crazy company dreamed up by Elon Musk, is dedicated to taking humanity out into the stars and, ultimately, colonizing Mars. Yes, colonizing Mars. And while we're a few years away from living on the red planet just yet, SpaceX is making important inroads into space travel.

As counsel for SpaceX, you'd be part of the burgeoning field of Space Law, but your day-to-day would be more corporate and securities issues and less E.T. The company is looking for an in-house lawyer to help manage its legal affairs, deal with corporate governance issues, and ensure securities regulation compliance. Experience with the aerospace industry is preferred, but not required.

2. Deputy City Attorney, Surprise, Arizona

To be honest, we're drawn to this job largely because it's for the city of Surprise, a name so charming we couldn't help but show interest. And the story of Surprise is in fact a bit surprising. Having been a sleepy town for the first few decades of its life (Surprise's founder said she'd "be surprised if the town ever amounted to much"), Surprise has undergone a boom in recent years, with its population almost tripling between 2000 and 2010.

If you get the job as deputy city attorney, you can help Surprise manage its surprising growth. The city is looking for a lawyer to represent it and its departments as general counsel, conduct legal research, review and administer contracts, leases, ordinances, and the like.

3. Associate Counsel, Crocs

Are you the kind of attorney who wants to wear pajamas to the office? Do you wish that Snuggies were still a thing? Does comfort take precedence for you?

Then you may have found your match at Crocs. The company behind the famously ugly-but-oh-so-comfortable shoes is looking for a corporate lawyer to join its in-house team. You'll work across departments, helping manage legal processes, negotiating agreements, and mitigating risks. You can probably even wear Crocs to work.
