How to Get Recognized for Being Awesome
That's because actually there is no such award. But let's face it, we all want it.
The good news is there are many awards that recognize lawyers for the good they do. The bad news is that you actually have to earn them.
Outstanding Young Lawyer
Kaitlin A. Brown got one. She has been awarded the 2018 Regeana Myrick Outstanding Young Lawyer Award by the Michigan State Bar.
Given by the young lawyers section, the award honors attorneys younger than 36 who have shown "overwhelming commitment to public service, service to the bar and exceptional leadership."
Brown will have to make room on her wall for the award because she's won a few. She received a Pro Bono Accomplishment Award from the local U.S. District Court, and a Member of the Year Award from the Michigan Women's Bar Association.
In other words, one way to get the most awesome award is to earn others first.
Do This, Not That
Award-winning is not a popularity contest, usually; you have to do something more than schmooze. Here are a few to-dos:
- Do pro bono or legal aid
- Volunteer for civic organizations
- Get involved in bar associations
And once you get that award, don't just put it on the wall. Use it tactfully for marketing.
Whatever you do, do not take on bad clients or cases to win awards. If you aren't careful, you could get nominated for the award for the "Dumbest Thing a Lawyer Can Say."
