Verizon iPhone: Top 6 Differences with ATT Model

By Jason Beahm on January 13, 2011 5:47 AM

It's official. The iPhone is finally coming to Verizon. After being tied to the AT&T Network since 2007, many people have longed for an iPhone on the Verizon network. Now that we know it is finally happening, smartphone consumers are moving on to the next reasonable question: what will some of the differences be?

There are actually quite a few, so here are some highlights:

  • The Verizon iPhone will have a portable Wi-Fi hotspot option, but the company has not announced how much the data rates will be.
  • On the Verizon iPhone, you won't be able to check your email or use the internet while you're making a call. Verizon uses a different type of technology, called CDMA, that doesn't allow both phone and data access simultaneously.
  • The Verizon iPhone will have a slightly different shape. That means some iPhone cases made for AT&T phones will not fit the Verizon version.
  • The Verizon iPhone will not make use of 4G technology as some had hoped. 4G is available with other smartphones on other networks, such as Sprint and T-Mobile. The AT&T iPhone does not currently use 4G either.
  • Pricing for the Verizon iPhone itself will be the same as AT&T service: $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB. Both carriers require a two year contract.
  • Switching from AT&T to Verizon will cost $250 with tax for the iPhone plus between $0 and $325 for the early termination fee, which is prorated. iPhone 4G phones have excellent resale value, so you could likely recoup most of the cost.
