Should Lawyers Upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy S III?

By Edward Tan, JD on June 26, 2012 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

Tech-loving lawyers rejoice, the Samsung Galaxy S III is nearly here. The South Korean company has just announced its latest addition to the Galaxy family. But for lawyers, is upgrading to the Galaxy S III worth it?

Gadget junkies need not answer that question. It's more directed toward attorneys who value function over being able to make their fellow associates jealous.

The Galaxy S III brings a number of changes to the popular line of Android smartphones. But for lawyers with the Galaxy S II, Note, or Nexus, an upgrade might not be necessary.

Depending on what your preferences are, that is.

Let's take a look at the system's speed first. The Galaxy S III will be running the latest Exynos chip. The quad-core processor clocks in at 1.4 GHz. A definite improvement over the dual-core CPUs in the Galaxy S II, Nexus, and Note.

As for display, the Galaxy S III has a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED screen. Definitely big for a smartphone. If you thought the Galaxy S II and Nexus were hard to hold, get ready to wish your hands were a little bigger. It's an odd choice considering that it's only a half-inch smaller than the Note's giant 5.3-inch display.

The rest of the Galaxy S III has either similar or slightly better hardware. Internal storage still comes in the usual 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB varieties, with up to 64GB more via microSD. The latter of which was sorely missed in the Galaxy Nexus. RAM is 1 GB. Multi-touch, gyroscope, FM tuner, light sensors, GPS and so forth, are all still in the Galaxy S III.

Aside from its speed and improved camera, perhaps the best improvements are in the device's software. The Galaxy S III runs Ice Cream Sandwich and comes with a number of Samsung tweaks.

It has S Voice, the company's latest voice command software. While it hasn't been demonstrated yet, Samsung promises that you'll be able to run the phone quite smoothly by just talking.

It's also capable of video overlay and Wi-Fi TV playback.

But probably the best feature for lawyers who upgrade to it is the virtual keyboard. The slightly bigger screen should make typing on the Samsung Galaxy S III much easier. If all this sounds good to you, an upgrade might be in order.
