Candy Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treating
Aside from the sugar overload that is necessary for a fun Halloween, there are some important things to remember about candy safety.
Every year there are stories of children who get sick or die as a result of unsafe candy and treats. Just because no one is intentionally trying to hurt your child doesn't mean there aren't health concerns you should avoid.
Before your little ghouls and heroes go out trick-or-treating, make sure you have some ground rules to keep them safe this Halloween.
Here are some tips to consider:
- If you only have one rule for candy this Halloween, make your child sit down with you at home before eating any candy. Having an adult check out the candy before it gets eaten is always a good idea, but doing it at home has an added benefit. In the house you have enough light to see if anything is wrong and you aren't trying to hold a small hand and keep walking at the same time.
- Candy that isn't wrapped is generally not a good idea and if the wrapper is opened or damaged, throw it out.
- Homemade goods can also be tricky because of the risk of food-borne illness when many little hands are grabbing at the goods. If your child has allergies, home baked goodies could also be dangerous, even if the maker doesn't think it contains any trigger ingredients.
- When it comes to foreign candy, use your best judgment. If you can't read the label, you can't know if there's something in there that could cause problems.
- A day or two before Halloween it's a good idea to quickly check online for any recent recalls on candy. Some people buy their candy ahead of time and might not know that it's suspected of being unsafe.
- Malicious tampering is rare but if you see something that seems intentionally unsafe, report it to police. If it ends up making your child sick you might want to consider your legal options with an attorney.
It's a good idea to have a healthy dose of concern but don't let it ruin the holiday. Take some precautions to stay safe and then have a spooky good time.
